Fisheries Facts

BC Halibut Fishery

Halibut have been commercially harvested on Canada’s west coast since the late 1800’s and, due to conservative management and responsible fishing, the resource remains healthy over 100 years later.

The commercial halibut fishery is an important component in the economic success of the province of British Columbia and a vital element in the social fabric of coastal communities of Canada’s west coast. The fishery is dominated by small businesses owned by individuals from all areas of the coast.
